Building a dream?

small brick ramblersmall brick ramblerI’m not a fan of most new construction, for two main reasons: first, new homes just feel more shittily constructed, and second, if they’re built in an existing neighborhood, they’re almost always monstrosities that give the smaller, older neighboring houses the finger. Case in point: building a dream house in Falls Church. Granted, the original house is tiny by today’s standards, and isn’t particularly full of character. But why demolish something that’s almost certainly better constructed than anything that can be built today, and put up something that’s too big in its place? I don’t know recognize where this particular house is, but just about any house in our neighborhood would be a candidate for demolition and rebuilding (in fact, three houses at the end of George Mason, right behind us, are McMansions), but somehow, the neighborhood as a whole hasn’t succumbed. Let’s hope that it never does. It’s worth noting that the finished house only superficially resembles the sketch that’s on the main page (second Falls Church listing); gone are the more expensive dormers and prominent brick false chimney.
